When it comes to divorce, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? My guess is that it’s lawyers, fights about money and children, attorneys, judges, arguments, and courtrooms. That is what most people assume, so you’re not alone in this.

Celebrities such as Adele, Brittney Spears, Gwen Stefani, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes, Ben Affleck & Jennifer Garner all chose the route of mediation to settle their divorce. But why? They have lots of money and can afford lawyers so why wouldn’t they choose that?

Did you know that to get divorced you don’t necessarily have to use an attorney? In fact, did you know amongst celebrities’ mediation is often used? That’s right, in fact it can be the preferred method used to divorce. What do celebrities know about divorce that we don’t know? Or perhaps they know that an adversarial divorce will cost them tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars and they are savvy enough to know they don’t want to spend their money that way. I’ll bet you are asking yourself, “What is different about a celebrity divorce compared to my current difficult relationship?” The answer is not very much, except maybe they have a lot more money than you do.

Celebrities are people just like you, are getting educated about non adversarial options to divorce. “Why,” you ask? Because they care about their families. They care about their finances. They care about their futures. People want options and they are challenging the status quo to provide solutions and they believe in thinking outside of the box.

Divorce doesn’t have to be a lose lose situation which is what most adversarial divorces feel like. It can truly be a win win situation. A win win situation happens when two well-meaning people meet with a professional mediator that helps them share their wants, desires and interests as it pertains to themselves and their family and along with mediation and divorce financial analysis the couple can come to an equitable agreement that satisfies all parties. Mediation is a confidential process between two parties and a third unbiased party.

Business Folder Marked Confidential

The mediation process is private and privileged. Perhaps celebrities don’t want their dirty laundry aired. Who wants their private lives aired in a public forum such as a courtroom? Celebrities are trying to protect their children and maintain some privacy and mediation is a great resource for maintaining that privacy. We meet with you and your spouse in a private setting to calmly discuss everything that matters to the two of you. We create a roadmap, starting at “Here’s where we are today” and we help you navigate to “Here’s where we are trying to get to in the future”.

You are probably wondering how long the mediation process takes. Each situation is different, and it depends on how many moving pieces there are to manage. We look at health issues, age considerations, financial concerns, housing, businesses, location, or relocation issues, parenting issues, educational concerns, property owned, refinancing, mortgages and deeds, emotional concerns for all parties involved, alimony, parenting plans, job concerns, budgeting concerns, division of assets, child support, age specific needs of your children, any special needs of your children, and there is much more.
